If you obsess over the zodiac and your latest horoscope (the way I do every morning) then you know all about the star signs and their meanings.
Maybe you've even heard about the four elemental groups and how they can influence your personality.
But there's another equally important aspect of your star sign that can reveal so much about who you are and how you live your life.
It's called your sign's modality, or mode, and everyone should learn theirs.
The Four Elements
Before we get to the modes, it's worth reviewing which element your zodiac sign falls under.
There are four groups of three signs, each linked to the orbits of the stars and planets. Signs born into each of the elemental groups share similar personally traits, despite being born in different seasons.
- The Fire signs - Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius - are linked to passion and bravery. While their emotions can make them hotheaded, they are also have warm, nurturing personalities.
- The Earth Signs - Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn - are connected to both loyalty and the material world. They are steady, dependable, but also easily distracted by small details.
- The Air Signs - Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius - are flighty and playful. They have a seemingly endless supply of creativity and energy, but often have trouble channeling it to .
- Finally, the Water signs - Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces - wear their emotions on their sleeves. They are empathetic and intuitive, but can also easily get overwhelmed by the everyday drama of their lives.
The Cardinal Mode - Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn
Cardinal signs are also called "reactions," or sometimes "hinges," because they fall at the changing of the seasons.
Like the new beginning they represent, the cardinal signs are full of energy, and are agents of change.
As a group they are dynamic and active, with the initiative to take on new projects and goals.
But they should be careful, because all that energy can wear out their friends and family.
If you fall into this mode, you need to learn to spend quiet, reflective time alone. Train yourself to plan ahead and use your energy more effectively.
If you know a cardinal sign, stay out of their way when they set their mind on a goal. And remember: when their nonstop enthusiasm is tiring you out, they don't mean to annoy you.
The Fixed Mode - Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius
The fixed mode falls in the middle of a season, when everyone has settled in to the changes and their new routines.
Maybe that's why the fixed signs are so set in their ways. No matter what element they fall under, fixed signs are known for being rigid, strong-willed, and downright stubborn.
But being opinionated isn't a bad thing, especially if you're right (and a fixed sign will insist they are).
You don't want to tell one of these signs they're on the wrong side of something, because they'll just plant their feet. It's better to coax them towards a new perspective slowly.
Still, their no-nonsense attitude and dependable nature make these signs great friends. They're the ones who always make plans and force the group to stick to them.
They can tackle anything they set their mind to, but don't expect them to work at anything but their own pace.
The Mutable Mode - Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces
Just as people become wiser in their old age, the signs that fall at the end of a season tend to be more resourceful and creative.
Born diplomats, these signs are considerate and expressive. Even in the midst of a crisis, they rarely lose their cool.
The mutable signs are expressive and flexible, but that comes at a price. They're not above playing both sides of an argument to suit their needs.
That lack of commitment can ruin friendships and relationships, but the mutable signs aren't totally uncaring.
Their tendency to "go with the flow" just carries them away sometimes, and they would do well to put their foot down instead of trying to please everyone.
While they're not as dynamic or dependable as the other modes, mutable signs are very understanding.
They're the sort of person you'll want to share your deepest feelings and concerns with - but make sure you can trust them first.
