Have you ever heard someone say "your home is a reflection of who you are?"
Well, there's plenty of truth to it.
Regardless of whether you own or rent your home, it is arguably your most personal space.
It's one of the few places that you can enter and then just be yourself. This is one of the main reasons why we care for our homes so much. They're our sanctuaries.
The way we organize, decorate, and treat our homes say a lot about the state of our minds. Your living space has a direct connection with how you feel overall, and this is why the concept of feng shui has fascinated so many people over thousands of years.
Feng shui is an ancient Chinese practice whose purpose is to "get your environment in alignment with who you are and where you want to go—to harmonize your energy with your home's energy," according to Real Simple.
Through feng shui, you'll be able to bring positive energy or Chi into your home and it won't cost you a dime. It's all about how you maintain and arrange the contents of your house that allow strong positive energy to flow freely.
"Feng shui is about creating a space that's not only pleasing to your eye, but also pleasing to all your senses, so that your home supports and enriches your life," said Feng Shui by Bridget owner Bridget Saraka. "How we live has a profound impact on what our experiences will be."
This will not only make your feel more at peace when you're home, but the energy will also bring you an overall sense of well-being.
Here are eight ways you bring strong feng shui energy into your home:
1. Make your front door visible
The front or main door is where the house gets most of its energy or chi, therefore making it a key element of feng shui.
Ensuring that the path to the door is unobstructed, clean, and welcoming will make it easier for chi to make its way into your home.
Avoid placing garbage bins, old plant pots, or other objects that block the path or steps leading up to the door.
Always maintain the grass, plants and flowers to create a clean and fresh appearance.
It's also important that your house number is visible from the street or even a car, because as Saraka said "If the universe can't find you, how can fortunate blessings find you?"
The color of your front door also plays a factor in how your home receives Chi. Determine the direction your door is facing, then pick a color accordingly.
For east-facing doors opt for earth tones like green and brown. Houses with doors facing west will benefit from shades like white and gray. South-facing doors draw energy from fiery hues like red and yellow, while dark colors like black and blue will do the trick for north-facing doors.
2. De-clutter your space
Now that you've made it easier for the outside of your home to attract Chi, it's time to make sure the inside matches.
The hallway represents opportunities, so in order to keep the energy circulating, you'll have to make sure that it stays clutter-free.
Instead of leaving shoes by the door, and hanging coats along the wall, keep them in a closet and make sure it's closed when not in use. It's recommended that you place some flowers and hang a mirror to increase the space's energy.
Next, go through your home, and get rid of things that are just taking up space and you haven't used them in a while. This will allow you to have a better understanding of the contents of your home, and what each item means to you.
If there are items and clothing that are damaged and can't be repaired, don't hold on to them. As for the ones in good condition, but you no longer have a purpose for, donate them.
Don't forget to get rid of objects that bring back upsetting memories. Keeping these around will only hinder the spread of positive energy.
3. Re-position your furniture
Once you've gotten rid of everything that's been contributing to the bad vibes in your house, it's time to re-position the furniture.
The way your arrange your furniture will not only bring positivity into your home, you will also feel more peaceful and comfortable.
The largest piece of furniture in a room like the big couch or bed, should always be in a position that allows you to clearly see the door.
Make sure the pathways in a room aren't blocked by tables or chairs, because not only is this a safety hazard, but it will prevent Chi to flow freely throughout the room. It's also recommended that you avoid furnishing your home with pieces that have hard angles and sharp corners.
As for electronics, they're a no-no in the bedroom, but when it comes to the living room, the entertainment center should be positioned strategically. When placed in the north side of your living room, it is believed to bring good luck in your career.
A TV placed in the south part of the room will bring you respect and fame.
4. Decorate with indoor plants
Ferns, lucky bamboos, and sage plants are great for warding off bad energy and improving the quality of air in your home.
Morning glory will bring peace and happiness, and it is believed that putting the seeds of the plant under your pillow will prevent nightmares and allow you to enjoy a good night's sleep.
Jade plant will bring wealth and prosperity to your home. It also symbolizes friendship, growth, and renewal. For maximum benefit, place it near the main seating area of your home.
For joy and health, add some miniature roses to the mix. They have healing properties that are known to reduce inflammation, alleviate anxiety, and depression.
Orchids are not only pretty to look at, they're also believed to bring fertility, prosperity and good luck. They can be placed in several rooms around the house to enhance creativity.
5. Add more color
It seems like many people are afraid of adding color to the walls of their home, but this shouldn't be the case.
While neutral colors pair well with all different types of furniture and decor, they're also known to lower your energy levels and ruin your mood, especially during the colder months.
To boost the positive energy in your home, try painting a wall or two with a color that's warm, but allows light to reflect.
Soft greens and yellows are perfect because they're reminiscent of nature.
"Green makes all colours pop, plus it's about life, vitality, growth and new vibrations," said explained Saraka.
If painting is too extreme for you, try adding color through art or accessories like pillows, throws, and lighting.
Just make sure the artworks you choose reflect positive images that will make you feel calm.
6. Use essential oils
Essential oils are great for relieving many health problems, including certain skin conditions, but did you know they can also help improve your mood and attract positive vibes into your home?
Each type of essential oil has a specific benefit, so you'll need to choose them based on your needs.
"To infuse a space with joy, use rose and orange essential oils. Rose is about love. Orange is about joy. So you're infusing joyful love into your space."
The best way to use these oils around your home is to add three to six drops in a spray bottle filled with water, then spray it as needed.
7. Let the light in
Having well-lit and ventilated rooms are of utmost importance when it comes to maintaining a feng shui atmosphere.
Keep windows and curtains open as much as possible to invite fresh air and natural light into the home.
If you're unable to get adequate sunlight in certain rooms, try a Himalayan salt lamp.
In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, the lamp gives off natural negative ions that will increase your energy, allow you to sleep better, neutralize radiation from electronics, and improve your mood.
